With the number of COVID-19 infections on the rise again, it seems like a good idea to have a physical reminder for social distancing.

Build

The device is made from a broom handle and a power cord. The broom handle is cut to 1.5 m (5 ft), which is the social distancing norm here. It can, of course, be adapted to fit your local policy. The power cord is some three phase 400 V cable with a mains plug on one side and stripped ends at the other. Single phase will work equally well. Everything is held together with some cloth tape.

Usage

While the device might lack in subtlety, it sends a very clear message. Hopefully this will encourage people to keep proper distance.

Range of the device is limited by the length of the power cord. You can increase it by bringing more extension cords or carrying a portable generator. It's not as flexible as I'd wish, but but I'll take what I can get to lower the risk of infection.
