
You are in a maze of twisty little passages, all alike. No, wait, that was another adventure.
You are in the alley between the houses, scarcely more than three paving stones wide. It is just enough for a bicycle, though the brick walls on either side are not forgiving if your hands should stray. Halfway down you notice a small window set in the wall, and beneath it a metal grille in the pavement.
At the far end two doors crowd together at odd angles, their frames turned askew to fit the narrow passage. One door is open, giving a glimpse of the garden beyond, while the neighbour’s remains firmly closed. High above, a lamp with motion sensor waits to bathe the alley in pale light when darkness falls.
